The alteration of the book consists of a combination of inside and outside covers to create the landscape through which the little boy travels. The initial title has been colored so that it also reads The Little Niño that Couldn’t.

As the train travels from downstage right to upstage left, the scale of the toy train and figures change from smaller to larger. The change in scale coincides with a transition in geography (from Central America to North America) in the map below, and a change in time (past to future).
