distraction
2010–18
The wall-mounted books depict adult contemporary distraction caused by social media. The three figures in desks illustrate the kind of distraction experienced by kids in the 1950’s that was more subliminal, i.e., societal ills such as McCarthyism, segregation, and fear of nuclear war. These unconscious states are represented in the veiled cubby spaces underneath the desks that are lit from within by LED lights, and contain contemporary books written for adult readers pertaining to these issues that were felt by kids but not discussed.
The altered books in this tableau :
-
Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves adapted from Grimm's Fairy Tales, (1937)
-
A Story of Our Gang by Eleanor Lewis Packer, (1929)
