The Steadfast Tin Soldier of Hans Christian Anderson’s story is missing one leg. The photo of the Vietnam vet represents his 20th-century counterpart: 5,281 American troops suffered single limb amputations; 1081 sustained multiple amputations in this conflict. [On back of plastic sleeve is a photo of a South Vietnamese single amputee.]
Below the photo of the double amputee is a flashcard with the word “why”. He states that his greatest tragedy is not his injury but the fact that he failed to ask this question.
The third enclosure contains an image of a Vietnam vet throwing his medals over a fence onto the Capitol steps in 1971.
