The objects, including the altered books, in this tableau are intended to be visually read from left to right. In this order they represent the chronological loss of Americans' innocence (as per Mark Twain's quote above: "There was never an end to American innocence, because there was never an innocence to end.") from the Westward Expansion to the Vietnam War.
