While the inset windows 1-10 recall a traditional Advent calendar, the new information that is revealed when they are opened concerns species decline and death rather than birth. The animals pictured in the insets are related juvenile species to the animals in the golden book. Accompanying each inset image are statistics stating the number of that particular species that remain, for instance 5,500 African wild dogs and only 200 Santa Cruz sheep.
